I have always preferred morning workouts. I’m not claiming that morning workouts are inherently better than evening workouts, just that personally they have always worked to my advantage.
Morning workouts get it out of the way
One of the major advantages of working out in the morning (and my favorite reason) is that you get your workout out of the way for the rest of the day. If like most people life gets busy after breakfast , morning may be your best time to exercise.
According to Cedric Bryant, PhD, Chief Science Officer with the American Council on Exercise in San Diego : “Research suggests in terms of performing a consistent exercise habit, individuals who exercise in the morning tend to do better”. Bryant himself exercises at 6 a.m. so that other things on his schedule do not get in the way of his workout www.webmd.com.
Morning workouts may burn more calories
Some experts believe that exercising in the morning on an empty stomach is the best way to burn stored fat, making it ideal for weight loss. Anthony Hackney, a professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill states that because people have elevated levels of cortisol and growth hormone in the morning, they will “draw more of [their] energy from[their] fat reserves.” This can potentially help with weight loss www.time.com
Morning workouts improve your mood
I tend to feel ready for anything after working out in the morning. No surprise there as exercise triggers the release of endorphins, those feel good chemicals that influence our mood. That means feeling more energetic and being a better mood throughout the day. Another benefit of exercising in the morning is an increased metabolic rate , so you will be burning more calories throughout the day.
Morning workouts promote better sleep
People who work out in the morning may be able to sleep better since exercise increases your heart rate and body temperature, which could compromise your sleep.
If you are not a morning person and do not want to get out of bed for a 5 a.m. workout, the good news is that there is some evidence that people perform best at high intensity exercise later in the day.
Nothing beats consistency though
Just cant do it in the morning? Don’t worry. Working out consistently is even more important that the time of the day that someone chooses to work out. You will get results regardless of which time of the day you work out as long as you exercise regularly and close to the same time everyday.
You can experiment with finding what time of the day is best for you to exercise by alternatively working out in the morning, noon, and evening for a few weeks each and seeing which one gives the best results.
